Tottenham are reportedly interested in making a move for West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, sending a ‘senior scout’ to watch him in action on Sunday.
The Lowdown: Johnstone a rare positive
The Baggies’ season has become increasingly disappointing as the months have passed, having started the campaign as one of the favourites for promotion from the Championship.
West Brom sit in the bottom-half of the table, but while numerous players have underperformed, Johnstone has continued to be a consistently strong player.
The 29-year-old has started 33 of his side’s league matches in 2021/22 to date, having been hailed as ‘outstanding’ by Sky Sports pundit Micah Richards.
The Latest: Spurs eye up move
According to Football Insider, a recruitment source has claimed that Spurs are interested in making a move for Johnstone in the near future. They sent a ‘senior’ figure to watch him against Birmingham City on Sunday.
The Englishman’s current deal expires at the end of the season, allowing the north Londoners to potentially snap him up on a free transfer.
The Verdict: Inevitable summer exit
There seems to be an inevitability about Johnstone’s exit this summer, with the Baggies fortunate that they managed to keep hold of him last year.
The three-time capped England international should be plying his trade in the Premier League, and unfortunately, it looks as though West Brom won’t be able to offer him that in 2022/23.
That being said, moving to Spurs wouldn’t make sense if Johnstone is going to be second-choice behind Hugo Lloris, with the Baggies hero someone who should be playing every week.
