More than 60 per cent of Premier League fans have admitted they place more importance on the Premier League than international success with England.

More than 2,000 football fans gave their opinion in a and YouGov survey and 63% said they would rather see their club win the Premier League than England win Euro 2024. Breaking it down by club, as many as 68% of Liverpool supporters and 67% of Newcastle fans, were the highest proportions favouring domestic success. Chelsea fans were most patriotic, with 60% picking England winning as their preference. But more than half of Everton, West Ham, Aston Villa, Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, Wolves, Tottenham, Manchester United and Manchester City fans all sided with their club over their country.

The majority going for club over country comes amid England failing search for a first trophy in men's international football in 58 years, stretching back to the World Cup in 1966. The Three Lions have had a few near misses over the years, most notably losing the Euro 2020 final against Italy on penalties.

Of the England fans surveyed, 29% think France will win Euro 2024, with only 22% plumping for their own team. But that is still ahead of Germany (12%) and Spain (10%). A quarter of England fans believe they will return to the final, although a semi-final exit (37%) is the most popular choice for how far the team will get.

After warm-up games against Bosnia-Hezergovina and Iceland – a win and a shock defeat – England will begin their Euro 2024 journey against Serbia on June 16. With Denmark and Slovenia to come in a favourable group stage, the expectation for a squad with genuine aspirations of lifting the trophy is maximum points.
