Everton are expected to spend big on a new centre-forward at the end of the season, and the Toffees should target a move for RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner.
What’s the word, then?
Everton have ambitions of becoming a top-six and eventually top-four team, but they will not be able to achieve that with their current crop of forwards.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored against Manchester City last weekend, but there are doubts over whether the 21-year-old is quite good enough at the top level.
Cenk Tosun and Oumar Niasse have just two Premier League goals between them this season, meanwhile, and there is an incredible onus on Richarlison to find the back of the net.
There will be funds for Marco Silva to improve the squad at the end of the season, and Everton should make an ambitious swoop for Werner.
The 22-year-old is one of the hottest forwards in world football, but his contract with Leipzig will expire in June 2020, and it seems likely that he will eventually move on.
What would Werner bring to Everton?
Goals, and a lot of them. Werner has netted nine times in 23 appearances for Germany, whilst he has already struck 12 times in all competitions for Leipzig this term.
Werner moved to Leipzig from Stuttgart in 2016, and has actually scored 54 times in 96 appearances for his German club, which is some record.
It did not quite happen for the striker at the 2018 World Cup, but his time will come again, and there is no question that he has the credentials to thrive in the Premier League.
It would take some effort from Everton to sign Werner when considering that a clutch of the biggest clubs in Europe will be monitoring developments.
However, it is the type of arrival that would send out the message that Everton mean business as they attempt to catch the top six.
