BBC pundit Robbie Savage has hit out at Tottenham Hotspur’s chances of winning a trophy under manager Jose Mourinho after the club’s 3-2 defeat to Wolves, per 606 (01:30).
What’s he said?
Spurs twice took the lead at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but were ultimately beaten by Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, falling five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea and two behind their opponents and Manchester United.
Mourinho was appointed following the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino in November and has overseen a light upswing in form; they had 14 points following a 1-1 draw with Sheffield United and now have 40 and remain in contention to qualify for Europe, though they are five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.
Much has been made of the fact that Mourinho has won a trophy at every club he has been with, but Savage believes that run will come to a screeching halt in north London.
He said: “I don’t think he is (going to win a trophy).
“14 points when he took over, he’s gained 26 points, put Spurs on 40 but, at the end of the day, you’ve got to say, Spurs fans ringing up here when he got the job, ‘Oh we’re going to win a trophy’.
“You’re miles off, miles off, you’re not going to win a trophy.”
A true test for any Spurs fan: Can you match these iconic images with the right results?
Not at this point
Mourinho isn’t doing much good at Spurs.
They have lost all of their last three games, to RB Leipzig in the Champions League, and Chelsea and Wolves in the Premier League.
They are now facing up to the prospect of failing to qualify for Europe’s premier club competition and there is no guarantee they will be able to progress in the FA Cup; they face Norwich City in the fifth round later this week.
Savage is right to claim that there was optimism around his chances of winning a trophy when he was appointed but with the defence he is currently managing – Spurs have kept one clean sheet in their last six games – in all competitions and with the limitations on his squad, with Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min injured, there is precious little chance of a medal being around his neck this season.
Next season, after a summer transfer window, could well be different but it does not feel positive at this point.
Savage may well be right.
