Cameroon boss Rigobert Song surprisingly left Onana on the bench for his team's must-win AFCON group game against The Gambia. The Indomitable Lions went on to win 3-2, coming back from two goals down, to knock The Gambia out and progress to the knockout stages on goals scored. Cameroon showed off their players celebrating victory after the match, with Onana shrugging off his disappointment at not playing to join in with his team-mates.

Onana's cousin, Fabrice Ondoa, took his place against The Gambia and will be hoping to keep his spot in what's becoming a tough tournament for the Manchester United stopper. He was accused of "disrespecting" Cameroon after arriving late to the tournament and was left out of the team's opener. Onana then made a vital mistake in Cameroon's defeat to Senegal before being dropped against The Gambia. Cameroon's progress means that Onana will now miss Manchester United's FA Cup clash against Newport County, allowing Altay Bayindir the chance to stake a claim for a spot at Old Trafford.

Cameroon go on to play Nigeria in the last 16 on Saturday. It remains to be seen who Song will pick in goal, with Onana reportedly dropped due to an ongoing feud with Cameroon FA President Samuel Eto'o. Meanwhile, Manchester United head to League Two side Newport on Sunday in a game which should see Bayindir make his first appearance since signing from Ankaragucu in the summer.
